Lumbini by Cycle

Cycling is one of the best ways to discover Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, and the historic sites around it. The land is flat, the pace is gentle, and three cycling trails lead you past monasteries, villages, farmland and ancient archaeological sites.

Maya Devi Temple

The temple at the heart of the Sacred Garden, built over the ancient remains that mark the birthplace.

Why it is important

Marks the spot where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born.

Ashoka Pillar

A stone pillar standing beside the Maya Devi Temple, carrying an inscription of Emperor Ashoka.

Why it is important

Its inscription records Ashoka's visit and identifies Lumbini as the birthplace of the Buddha.

Archaeological remains of a fortified city with gateways, walls and a palace area.

Why it is important

Identified as ancient Kapilvastu, where Prince Siddhartha lived before leaving the palace.
